UAE Unveils Roadmap for Green Intellectual Property to Foster Innovation

Dubai: The Ministry of Economy has launched a new roadmap for "Green Intellectual Property (IP)" aimed at promoting innovation, accelerating technology localisation, and developing new projects in the new economy, environmental sustainability, and circular economy.

According to Emirates News Agency, the three-month roadmap is set to enhance the competitiveness of the UAE's IP landscape and contribute to the country's progress and prosperity by supporting directives to transition to a circular economy. Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy and Chairman of the UAE Circular Economy Council, emphasized the role of intellectual property as a key pillar in building a strong and sustainable national economy.

Al Marri further noted that the roadmap serves as a step towards raising awareness about the importance of adopting green technology and innovation, aiming to provide services and products that benefit the community and enhance the UAE's appeal for sustainable innovations. This initiative aligns with the 'We the UAE 2031' vision to position the country among the most innovative globally.

The roadmap's launch coincides with this year's Innovation Month, marking a collaborative effort with local environmental stakeholders and the World Intellectual Property Organisation to meet its objectives. The goal is to provide more opportunities for inventors and creators to develop sustainable innovations in crucial economic sectors.

A media briefing organised by the Ministry at its Dubai headquarters highlighted the roadmap's objectives and its role in supporting national efforts to promote innovations in sustainable economy sectors. Abdulla Ahmed Al Saleh, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Economy, underscored the UAE's commitment to sustainability, rooted in its cultural fabric and history.

Al Saleh stressed the Ministry's dedication to supporting national projects for sustainability across various economic sectors, aligned with the UAE's vision of a sustainable economy that safeguards natural resources for future generations. He highlighted the roadmap's aim to promote digital solutions and advanced technology for sustainable products and services, emphasizing partnerships with academic and research institutions to integrate IP into sustainable innovations.

The roadmap aims to boost the UAE's competitiveness and elevate its standing in global indicators, particularly the Global Innovation Index, where the UAE holds a strong position regionally and internationally. Key objectives include a programme to accelerate patent registrations for sustainable technologies, with a target of increasing the percentage of such registrations to eight per cent of the total.

Strengthening legal frameworks for protecting patents related to environmental sustainability is also a focus, in light of the growing number of patent applications, which reached approximately 3,622 in 2024. Al Saleh highlighted the UAE's achievements in establishing a competitive legislative framework for IP growth, covering industrial property rights, trademarks, and copyrights.

The UAE continues to lead in IP and innovation, ranking first in the region in the Global Innovation Index 2024.
