Dubai: The UAE has embarked on a groundbreaking initiative to map air corridors and establish a regulatory framework for piloted and autonomous flying taxis and cargo drones. This announcement was made during the World Governments Summit, highlighting the country's commitment to revolutionizing urban transportation.
According to Emirates News Agency, the development of these aerial corridors and regulations is expected to be completed within the next 20 months. The planned routes will connect key international airports with iconic locations across the UAE, facilitating the seamless integration of flying taxis and cargo drones into urban landscapes.
The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and the Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC) entities, including the Technology Innovation Institute (TII) and ASPIRE, have formed a strategic partnership to share technical expertise in airspace management. This collaboration aims to establish a comprehensive regulatory framework that prioritizes safety and operational efficiency.
By leveraging TII's network of stakeholders, which includes regulators, industry leaders, and researchers, the initiative seeks to ensure the safe integration of piloted and autonomous air taxis and cargo drones in urban environments. The new air corridors are expected to offer innovative solutions for passenger and cargo transport, alleviating pressure on traditional road networks and enhancing connectivity.

Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director-General of the GCAA, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating that mapping air corridors for piloted and autonomous air taxis and drones is a critical milestone for the implementation of Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) in the UAE's infrastructure. Dr. Najwa Aaraj, CEO of TII, highlighted the transformative nature of the collaboration with GCAA, which is reshaping urban transportation by advancing airspace management and integrating air taxis and cargo drones.
Stephane Timpano from ASPIRE noted that addressing real-time urban mobility challenges through solutions like air taxis and drones is a major step forward, supporting sustainable economic growth by creating a flexible transport system. Prof. Enrico Natalizio, Chief Researcher of the Autonomous Robotics Research Center at TII, discussed TII's development of advanced AI-powered algorithms for autonomous systems, enabling real-time decision-making for air taxis and drones.
The World Governments Summit, held under the theme 'Shaping Future Governments', hosted over 30 heads of state and government, more than 80 international and regional organizations, and 140 government delegations. The event featured over 200 interactive sessions and 21 global forums, exploring major future trends and transformations, with more than 300 prominent speakers and over 30 ministerial meetings and roundtables attended by more than 400 ministers.
