Brussels: US Ambassador to Belgium, Bill White, has urged the Belgian government to formally denounce Conner Rousseau, a Socialist party leader, for his controversial comparison of President Donald Trump to Adolf Hitler. This appeal was reported by daily De Morgen on Wednesday.
According to Anadolu Agency, Ambassador White sent a letter on Tuesday to Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot, expressing his concerns and requesting an immediate condemnation of Rousseau, who leads the Flemish socialist party Vooruit. White criticized a video posted by Rousseau in which he drew parallels between Trump and Hitler, labeling it as “completely unreasonable and unacceptable.” He further described the comments as “defamatory” and emphasized that such remarks should not be tolerated.
In response to White’s actions, the Belgian government has advised the US ambassador to respect its institutions and sovereignty, following his public criticism of an ongoing judicial investigation that has sparked a diplomatic dispute. The Belgian Foreign Ministry issued a statement highlighting that personal attacks on government members and interference in Belgium’s internal affairs violate fundamental diplomatic principles.
This diplomatic tension was further strained by White’s previous criticism of a Belgian minister and his claims of antisemitism concerning the prosecution of three Jewish ritual circumcisers in Antwerp. White had openly described the case as “ABSOLUTELY an issue of antisemitism” on the US social media platform X.
