US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken spoke yesterday with Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum, State Dept. Spokesperson Matthew Miller said in a statement on Wednesday. The two discussed Acting Deputy Secretary Nuland's recent trip to Niamey and the Secretary conveyed the United States' ongoing support for a solution that restores Niger to democratic rule and constitutional order.
The Secretary also emphasized that the safety and security of President Bazoum and his family are paramount, according to the statement.
Yesterday, Miller described Nuland's talks with the coup leaders in Niger as difficult, noting that the talks failed to make a breakthrough.
On Friday, the US suspended some aid programs for Niger pending the restoration of the democratic rule.
