WGS Releases Report on National Identity as Key to Trust, Resilience, and Competitiveness

Dubai: The World Governments Summit, in partnership with Strategy and Middle East, a member of the PwC network, has unveiled a report titled 'Being and Belonging: Sustaining National Identity in a Changing World'. The report underscores the role of national identity in fostering social cohesion, enhancing economic performance, and bolstering global reputation amidst the challenges posed by globalization, migration, and technological advancements.

According to Emirates News Agency, the report emphasizes that national identity can be strategically shaped to reinforce cohesion and trust or allowed to evolve passively, potentially undermining social stability and credibility. An inclusive and well-defined national identity is seen as vital for building trust between citizens and institutions, supporting national resilience, competitiveness, and international stature.

Dima Sayess, Partner at Strategy and Middle East and leader of the Ideation Center, highlighted the critical link between national identity and trust, stating that a weakened national identity can erode trust and cohesion, whereas a deliberately strengthened identity can foster a shared sense of purpose and national stability. The report aims to demystify national identity by breaking it down into actionable components that governments can assess and manage.

The report advocates a diagnostic approach, recognizing that national identity varies globally, influenced by civic values, culture, religion, history, or unifying symbols. This diagnostic allows governments to evaluate their national context and identify key identity markers vital for social cohesion and trust.

Global examples in the report, such as the Gulf region, illustrate active shaping of national identity through policies. In the UAE, efforts focus on reinforcing cultural and civic identity markers like Arabic language preservation and national celebrations. Saudi Arabia integrates identity into cultural programs and economic development, with initiatives like the Hijrah route project.

Melissa Rizk, Director of Actionable Foresight and Innovation at Strategy and Middle East, noted that in a digital, interconnected world, identity is constantly evolving. The report's framework aids governments in determining essential aspects of their society to preserve or adapt in line with evolving contexts and ambitions.

The report categorizes national identity into demographic, cultural, economic, and civic markers, enabling governments to prioritize those defining their national identity. It highlights the importance of embedding national identity in education, culture, media, and public policy, using indicators to track progress and adapt to changing realities.

This initiative is part of the World Governments Summit's knowledge partnership program, which aims to equip governments with insights to address policy challenges and build resilient, future-ready societies.
