Abu Dhabi: The United Arab Emirates has signed a host country agreement with the World Health Organisation (WHO), marking a significant development in their collaborative efforts to address global health emergencies. This agreement is seen as a vital advancement in the long-standing strategic partnership between the UAE and WHO.
According to Emirates News Agency, the UAE’s ongoing commitment was further demonstrated through the signing of a funding agreement with WHO, providing US$3 million to support Sudanese refugees in Chad. The agreements were formalized by Reem Al Hashimy, UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation, and Dr. Michael Ryan, WHO Deputy Director General and Executive Director of Health Emergencies Programme, during a ceremony in Abu Dhabi.
WHO’s presence in the UAE dates back to 2015 with the establishment of the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office Hub in Dubai. This hub has played a crucial role in responding to health emergencies across the region. Over the years, the opera
tions from this hub have expanded significantly, transforming it into the WHO Hub for Global Health Emergencies Logistics. This expansion reflects the robust logistical framework provided by the UAE’s strategic location and the rising global demand for health emergency responses. WHO reports a 400% increase in the value of health supplies processed through the hub in recent years, underscoring the growing need for rapid response capabilities worldwide.
The UAE’s US$3 million contribution aims to enhance the health and well-being of Sudanese refugees in Chad, with a particular focus on women and children. This funding will allow WHO to improve access to essential maternal and child health services, including vaccinations and nutrition, while also bolstering the resilience of local health systems in affected areas.
Reem Al Hashimy emphasized the UAE’s commitment to global health initiatives, stating that the partnership with WHO will continue to address worldwide health challenges and support vulnerable commu
nities. She highlighted the importance of the agreement in ensuring the delivery of critical humanitarian aid in conflict zones and crisis-affected regions.
Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, acknowledged the UAE as a valuable partner, noting the significance of the host agreement for the Global Health Emergencies Logistics Hub. He also expressed gratitude for the UAE’s support in WHO’s humanitarian response operations for Sudanese refugees in Chad.
