On the second day of the Sustainable Maritime Industry Conference (SMIC), a panel discussion addressed the topic "Maritime Circular Economy", with President and CEO of the World Ocean Council Paul Holthus talking about major projects and ambitions that have been achieved, as well as "those in the making" in the sector in the Kingdom, contributing to meeting the goal of protecting the marine environment.
Holthus said that coastal tourism is a new industry that aims to diversify the economy, and that the Kingdom’s vision has placed sustainability at the heart of this industry since inception. He also talked about the redefinition of the circular economy in the maritime industry to include relevant industry ecosystems, such as recycling, product design and development and not be limited to shipping and maritime sectors.
CEO of the Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency Dr. Peterside Dakuku said that regulations and legislation are essential to achieving sustainability in the industry, as they set clear principles and directives for waste management and align local regulations with international standards.
CEO of the Saudi Investment Recycling Company (SIRC), a PIF Subsidiary, Eng. Khaled Alrashed said that SIRC has the potential to become a key player in the maritime economic arena, starting with the establishment of facilities for receiving materials as a first step toward enabling sustainability in the industry.
