Yemen: A vessel carrying African migrants sank off the coast of Yemen, resulting in the death of dozens, as reported by the UN's International Organization for Migration (IOM) on Sunday.
According to Deutsche Welle, sixty-eight out of approximately 154 migrants on board the boat perished when it sank early on Sunday, with 74 individuals still unaccounted for. The Associated Press news agency, citing the IOM, provided these figures, highlighting the tragic loss of life.
Despite Yemen's ongoing civil war, the country remains a key transit point for migrants aiming to reach affluent Arab nations like Saudi Arabia in search of better opportunities. There is a sizable Ethiopian community in Saudi Arabia, along with notable diaspora populations in the UAE and Bahrain. However, the journey through Yemen is fraught with danger due to the ongoing conflict between the Iran-linked Houthis and the UN-recognized government. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, a 2020 Human Rights Watch Report documented instances where the Houthis killed and expelled Ethiopian migrants in Yemen.
Ethiopia continues to grapple with significant challenges, including widespread poverty and the aftermath of conflicts such as the one involving the Tigray region. These conditions drive many to seek a better life elsewhere. An IOM report published in March highlighted that 60,000 migrants traveled to Yemen in 2024, underscoring the magnitude of migration through this perilous route. The IOM describes the passage from the Horn of Africa to Yemen as "one of the world's busiest and most perilous mixed migration routes."
The Horn of Africa, comprising Ethiopia, Somalia, Djibouti, Eritrea, and the breakaway region of Somaliland, faces severe drought conditions exacerbated by climate change. This, combined with food insecurity, propels migrants to seek refuge and opportunities in the affluent Gulf Arab states or Europe.
