Taipei:Typhoon Champi swept past Taiwan, resulting in the death of one person and injuries to more than 530 others, as reported by authorities on Saturday.
According to Wam, the fatality occurred on Thursday when a man was swept into the sea by waves at the southern tip of the island. The storm inflicted extensive damage across various parts of Taiwan, with nearly 2,200 trees uprooted and over 700 buildings damaged.
Additionally, Champi left more than 280,000 households without electricity temporarily. The storm, which briefly intensified to super typhoon status, weakened subsequently. Taiwan's weather agency recorded sustained wind speeds of up to 126 kilometers per hour (kph) and gusts reaching 162 kph near the storm's center.
The typhoon is anticipated to continue its trajectory northwards, moving past the area near China's coastal province of Zhejiang by Sunday.
