Abu dhabi: The Department of Health - Abu Dhabi (DoH), the regulatory authority of the healthcare sector in the Emirate, and Novartis Middle East FZE have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at fostering collaboration in genomics research, scientific capacity building, and advanced therapies. This partnership underscores their joint dedication to advancing healthcare innovation and improving patient outcomes.
According to Emirates News Agency, this collaboration further bolsters Abu Dhabi's genomics ecosystem by integrating global scientific expertise with one of the world's largest population genomics programs. The combined efforts in research, capability building, and advanced therapies are expected to translate genomic insights into enhanced health outcomes for patients both in Abu Dhabi and globally.
This strategic partnership will capitalize on Abu Dhabi's existing strengths in genomics, precision medicine, and health innovation. It aims to support research that is pertinent to the UAE population while enhancing local scientific capabilities and promoting access to innovative therapies. The collaboration builds on Abu Dhabi's leadership in genomics through the Emirati Genome Programme, which has successfully sequenced over 900,000 genomes. These insights are paving the way for advancements in precision medicine, population-specific research, and the development of more targeted approaches to prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
Dr. Asma Ibrahim Al Mannaei, Executive Director of the Health Life Sciences Sector at DoH, emphasized the significance of the agreement, stating that Abu Dhabi has established one of the world's most comprehensive population genomics programs. She highlighted that this collaboration with Novartis strengthens an ecosystem that integrates genomics, research, healthcare delivery, and innovation within a singular connected environment. By merging global scientific expertise with Abu Dhabi's capabilities in genomics and precision medicine, the translation of research into practical solutions for improved patient and community outcomes is being accelerated.
Mohamed Ezz Eldin, Head of Novartis GCC Cluster, expressed pride in reinforcing their longstanding collaboration with DoH through this strategic MoU. He noted that combining Abu Dhabi's ambitious vision for healthcare innovation with Novartis' global scientific expertise presents an opportunity to support advancements in genomics research, scientific capability building, and the future of precision medicine. He also expressed anticipation for initiatives that can contribute to better health outcomes and address the evolving needs of patients in the UAE.
The signing of the MoU builds on the existing relationship between DoH and Novartis, which spans various areas, including clinical research, health technology assessment, and policy engagement in innovative treatment domains. This agreement further reflects the commitment of both organizations to fostering scientific collaboration, enhancing local capabilities, and promoting innovation that benefits patients in Abu Dhabi and beyond.
The MoU was signed during a visit by the DoH delegation to the Novartis Biomedical Research site in San Diego, coinciding with the BIO International Convention 2026. The visit included leadership engagement, a site tour, and discussions on future opportunities for collaboration in genomics and biomedical research.
