Severe Storm Claims 13 Lives in Chile

Abu dhabi: A severe storm that swept across Chile has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 individuals, the Chilean government announced on Tuesday. The storm, which began on July 15, has significantly impacted typically arid regions such as Coquimbo and Atacama, where heavy rainfall is a rare occurrence.

According to Emirates News Agency, the storm has also left seven people missing, as reported by Alicia Cebrian, Director of Chile's SENAPRED national emergency service. The adverse weather conditions have caused the destruction of approximately 2,800 homes. Additionally, the heavy rains have led to swollen rivers and mud-blocked roads, effectively isolating several towns.

Interior Minister Claudio Alvarado indicated that while the rains are expected to decrease, there remain significant risks due to the swollen riverbeds and ravines that could pose further threats to the affected areas.
