Abu Dhabi:Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) has announced a remarkable increase in renewable and clean energy generation in Abu Dhabi, with a surge of over 1,000 percent from 2020 to 2025. This growth highlights the Emirate's successful energy transition, driven by nuclear, solar, and wind power.
According to Emirates News Agency, the substantial progress is attributed to EWEC's strategic long-term capacity planning and the integration of renewable and clean energy technologies into Abu Dhabi's power system. The Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant, the first of its kind in the Arab world, became operational in four phases between 2020 and 2024, providing a steady source of emissions-free baseload power. Additionally, major projects like Al Dhafra Solar PV and Noor Abu Dhabi have significantly expanded the renewable generation capacity.
EWEC's latest operational data indicates that renewable and clean electricity sources now contribute to nearly 46 percent of Abu Dhabi's total power generation, a substantial increase from under 5 percent in 2020. The energy generation from renewable and clean sources escalated from approximately 4,100 gigawatt hours (GWh) in 2020 to over 49,300 GWh by 2025.
Mohamed Almarzooqi, Chief Assets Officer of EWEC, emphasized the impact of the organization's long-term planning and the integration of a diversified energy portfolio. He stated that the integration of nuclear, solar, and wind energy has reduced carbon intensity while maintaining energy supply reliability, which is essential for the UAE's ongoing economic growth. EWEC continues to enhance renewable and clean energy capacity, aiming for a more resilient and sustainable energy system for Abu Dhabi and the UAE.
EWEC's efforts align with the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy's Clean Energy Strategic Target 2035 and the UAE Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative, reinforcing Abu Dhabi's position as a leader in the global energy transition.
