Dubai Unveils Initiatives for Food Security Strategy 2030

Dubai:The Dubai Environment and Climate Change Authority (DECCA) has announced five key initiatives under the Dubai Food Security Strategy 2030. This strategy was approved by H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of the UAE, and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai.

According to Wam, the strategy is designed to ensure sufficient and safe food availability for all residents of Dubai. It supports the UAE National Food Security Strategy 2051 and aims to enhance the country's standing in the Global Food Security Index and the Resilient Food Systems Index.

The strategy revolves around five pillars food availability, affordability, quality and safety, sustainability and resilience, and industry empowerment. Ahmed Mohammed bin Thani, Director General of DECCA, stated that the strategy aims to position Dubai as a global leader in sustainable food security through advanced technologies and resilient supply chains. It focuses on boosting local production, reducing food waste, and ensuring the availability and affordability of healthy food.

DECCA's Food Security Department will manage the strategy's implementation in collaboration with local and federal government entities and the private sector. The first initiative promotes sustainable local agricultural production, enhancing sector competitiveness and sustainable practices. Key projects include expanding fisheries, livestock development, and supporting small-scale farmers.

The second initiative seeks to strengthen resilient food supply chains through strategic projects aimed at diversifying food import destinations and collaborating with importers of strategic commodities. The third initiative focuses on promoting healthy, sustainable food consumption and reducing food waste, featuring projects like a comprehensive waste reduction program.

The fourth initiative enhances governance, regulation, and economic support for integrated food systems, including projects to enhance the Food Security Platform and an Investor Information Platform for the AgriTech industry. The fifth initiative aims to create a food ecosystem adaptable to market changes through advanced infrastructure and international research cooperation.

These initiatives are expected to raise public awareness of food security as an integral part of stable and sustainable food supply chains, addressing regional and global challenges, climate change, and market fluctuations.
