EU Postpones Tariffs on US Goods Until August

Brussels: The European Union has announced a delay in the imposition of tariffs on goods imported from the United States, extending the suspension until early August. This decision comes despite the United States' plan to enforce 30 percent tariffs on EU products starting August 1st.

According to Emirates News Agency, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen disclosed that the United States sent a letter detailing measures that will be implemented unless a negotiated settlement is achieved. In response, the EU has decided to postpone its countermeasures to provide additional time for further negotiations.

Von der Leyen's announcement follows US President Donald Trump's confirmation that 30 percent tariffs on EU imports will be enforced beginning August 1st, notwithstanding the ongoing discussions between the two parties.

The German news agency reports that von der Leyen emphasized the EU's proactive stance, assuring that the European Commission is preparing additional countermeasures over the coming weeks. This indicates the EU's readiness to respond if negotiations do not yield a favorable outcome.

Information previously released by the European Union suggests that the proposed countermeasures could impact US exports valued at £21 billion (US$24.5 billion). This underscores the significant economic stakes involved in the ongoing trade discussions.

EU trade ministers are set to convene in Brussels on Monday to deliberate on the next steps following the recent developments in US-EU trade relations. The meeting will assess whether to support von der Leyen's choice to delay the countermeasures and continue negotiations until the early August deadline.
