EU Urges Immediate Action Against Cyberattacks on Refrigeration Systems

Brussels:European Union cybersecurity authorities have called on organizations to take immediate measures to mitigate exposure to cyber threats following a recent wave of incidents on November 1st and 2nd targeting refrigeration systems.

According to Emirates News Agency, the warning was issued jointly by the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA), the European Commission, Europol's European Cybercrime Centre (EC3), the EU Computer Security Incident Response Teams Network (EU CSIRTs Network), and the European Cyber Crisis Liaison Organisation Network (EU-CyCLONe).

Affected EU member states are actively investigating the incidents and are providing guidance. National cybersecurity response teams and crisis management authorities are exchanging information and closely monitoring developments. ENISA and other relevant EU bodies are also involved in monitoring the situation to support a coordinated response.

The agencies have advised organizations to consult the latest security advisories available through national cybersecurity response teams' official channels and ENISA's advisory collection. They reminded hardware and software manufacturers of their obligations under the EU Cyber Resilience Act to report severe incidents and actively exploited vulnerabilities through the Act's Single Reporting Platform.

The main cybersecurity requirements of the Act will take effect on December 11th, 2027, mandating manufacturers to integrate security into product design and provide security support throughout product lifecycles. Organizations governed by the EU's Network and Information Security Directive (NIS2) are also required to implement cybersecurity risk management measures and report significant incidents to the relevant national authorities or computer security incident response teams.

ENISA continues to promote secure-by-design and secure-by-default principles through technical advisories, guidance, and information-sharing initiatives aimed at enhancing cybersecurity across the EU.
