General Presidency of the Two Holy Mosques Provides 242 Misting Fans to Cool Grand Mosque

The Technical, Operational and Maintenance Agency at the General Presidency for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque provided 242 misting fans to cool the Grand Holy Mosque squares. Temperature is thus lowered by approximately 6°C.

Misting fans are used to cool open spaces; water is pumped by a high-pressure pump (at least 42 kilograms/1 square centimeter) in high-pressure pipes after being passed through filters to purify it. Each propeller contains infinitesimal nozzles of a size ranging between 2 to 1 micro, from which water comes out as a cold mist.

The fans are located throughout the Grand Holy Mosque squares; they have a height of about four meters, a diameter of up to 38 inches, an airflow speed of up to 1,100 CFM that reaches up to 10 meters. The fans are operated at prayer time, when the squares of the Grand Mosque are full and when the temperature is high. This cooling system is the most suitable for open spaces where it helps drop temperatures by 6°C. The cooling load reaches 52 kW per fan and the cooling efficiency exceeds 50%.
