Hungary’s Orban Re-Elected as Fidesz Leader Amid Political Shifts

Budapest: Viktor Orban, Hungary's former premier who lost power in the April 12 election, was re-elected as leader of the Fidesz party for another year on Saturday. Some 729 delegates voted in favor of Orban, 62, at the party congress, with none opposing and eight abstentions.

According to Anadolu Agency, Orban addressed the delegates, acknowledging the party's electoral defeat and taking responsibility for it. He noted that Hungary was on the brink of political chaos, but expressed optimism, stating, "the future belongs to the patriots." Orban attributed Fidesz's electoral failure to a flawed strategy, including underestimating voter turnout and the strength of opponents, losing the support of young voters, and the impact of foreign-controlled algorithms.

Orban emphasized the need for Fidesz to reorganize after 16 years in government, suggesting a transformation into a 'movement party.' He proposed changes to the party's structure, such as a broader presidency and enhanced local organization, urging, "Let's fix Fidesz from the basement to the attic by September."

The recent elections saw Peter Magyar's Tisza party secure victory, ending Orban's 16-year tenure as prime minister, marking a significant political shift in Hungary.
