MBZUAI Marks Fifth Anniversary with AI Milestones

Abu dhabi: Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) this week began celebrations marking its fifth anniversary with a ceremony attended by Khaldoon Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the University's Board of Trustees, alongside board members Rima Al Mokarrab and Peng Xiao, and MBZUAI President and University Professor Eric Xing.

According to Emirates News Agency, the anniversary, held under the theme "Pioneering Tomorrow: AI, Science and Humanity," marks five years since the world's first AI-focused university welcomed its inaugural cohort in 2020. Al Mubarak highlighted that MBZUAI has become a key pillar in the UAE's strategy to establish itself as a global leader in artificial intelligence, contributing to a knowledge-driven economy by attracting top-tier talent and advancing research that tackles real-world issues.

Xing commented that the university was founded as part of the UAE's long-term strategy to integrate artificial intelligence as a critical infrastructure for economic and scientific advancement. He emphasized that MBZUAI has secured leading global research rankings and is expanding into a comprehensive research institution covering disciplines such as life sciences, advanced computing, and fundamental sciences.

MBZUAI currently holds the 10th position globally in CSRankings in core specializations like artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer vision, natural language processing, robotics, and computational biology. The university was also acknowledged among the top 50 organizations pushing the global AI frontier at NeurIPS 2025. The academic community includes 116 faculty members and 653 students from 59 nationalities.

A significant milestone in the university's progress was the launch of its first undergraduate program in 2025, which broadened MBZUAI's academic scope to eight departments, promoting a multidisciplinary approach to AI education and application. So far, the university has produced 318 alumni, with 44 percent pursuing research careers, while others have made contributions in technology, healthcare, government, energy, and industry sectors.

MBZUAI has also broadened its research capabilities through the Institute of Foundation Models, with laboratories in Abu Dhabi, Silicon Valley, and Paris. The institute has developed innovative systems such as K2-Think and Jais 2, a prominent open-weight Arabic large language model.

As part of the anniversary celebrations, MBZUAI is organizing a week of events and initiatives, including the launch of The Academy at MBZUAI to enhance public engagement with AI, the establishment of an Academic Advisory Board, an Abu Dhabi Edge Summit, and an international biomedical conference in partnership with Nature. The program also features undergraduate innovation showcases, alumni-led initiatives, distinguished lectures, community outreach programs, and commemorative honors, including a special anniversary coin and stamp.

The celebrations underscore MBZUAI's increasing influence in promoting artificial intelligence for scientific advancement, economic development, and societal welfare while strengthening Abu Dhabi's status on the global AI map.
