Abu dhabi: The record-breaking Manchester City Abu Dhabi Cup concluded its seventh edition, drawing over 3,500 young athletes from across the region and internationally. The event, held at Zayed Sports City over three days, showcased young talent in what is considered the region's largest annual youth football tournament.
According to Emirates News Agency, the tournament welcomed more than 244 teams from 18 countries, including professional clubs such as Al Jazira, Baniyas, Al Wahda, Al Ain, Melbourne City, and Manchester City. These teams competed across eight age categories, with boys participating in five age groups and girls in three. The event attracted 8,000 spectators who witnessed a weekend filled with competitive football.
The winning teams of the eight Cup competitions were entered into a draw for a chance to win a unique trip to a City Football Group club. This trip includes training sessions and the opportunity to watch a first-team match. The Boys' U16s winners, Al Seeb from Oman, were selected in the draw, marking their consecutive win in the same age group. They previously won a trip to Manchester. Additionally, Singapore's Resistencia FC, the U14 Girls Plate winners, will receive a three-day football clinic from City Football Schools coaches.
For the first time, the tournament expanded to three days to meet the growing demand from teams worldwide. The event featured 2,562 goals scored in 1,435 matches. Another notable expansion was the inclusion of 44 girls' teams across three age groups, highlighting the increasing popularity of girls' football in the UAE, the Middle East, and globally.
Nedum Onuoha, a former Manchester City defender and the tournament's ambassador, emphasized the importance of such tournaments in nurturing future footballers. He stated that these events provide young players with valuable opportunities to learn, grow, and test themselves in a competitive environment.
Simon Hewitt, Head of Football Operations MENA for City Football Group and Tournament Director, remarked on the unifying power of football showcased by the Manchester City Abu Dhabi Cup 2026. He noted that the challenge now is to further evolve the tournament for 2027, with preparations already underway.
