Sharjah: The Sharjah Electricity, Water, and Gas Authority (SEWA) has successfully replaced 25 kilometres of old asbestos water pipes with new GRE material pipes during 2024, at a cost of 22 million dirhams. This initiative is part of SEWA's ongoing commitment to developing and modernizing water networks across the region.
According to Emirates News Agency, Engineer Faisal Al Sarkal, Director of the Water Department at SEWA, highlighted the authority's focus on enhancing water transmission and distribution networks to meet the increasing water demand driven by Sharjah's rapid development. The strategy involves ambitious projects that align with Sharjah's comprehensive development in infrastructure, construction, economy, and urbanization, under the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah.
Al Sarkal also stressed the importance of using modern, high-quality materials to replace the old pipes, which significantly improves the water network's reliability and efficiency while ensuring the health and safety of the public.
Looking ahead to 2025, SEWA plans to replace an additional 40 kilometres of asbestos pipes with GRE pipes in areas such as Al Hazannah, Al Jazat, and Industrial Area 13, with costs expected to exceed 40 million dirhams. The plan also includes expanding the water network by 60 kilometres to accommodate the needs of Sharjah's growing population and to complete the water network in several newly developed areas.
