Dubai: Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak Al Shamsi, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, emphasized that the UAE places strong emphasis on water security, identifying it as a crucial issue discussed across global dialogue platforms. She asserted that water security is prominently featured in many sustainability-related agreements and is considered a central pillar of national development for countries worldwide.
According to Emirates News Agency, Dr. Al Dahak highlighted the UAE's focus on innovation and solution-driven approaches through technology and scientific research within the framework of water security. She mentioned the upcoming launch of the Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative in early 2024, aimed at providing sustainable and innovative water security solutions across various sectors. This includes addressing agricultural sector challenges through the Water Challenge for Agriculture, with an announcement of winners and finalists awaited.
Dr. Al Dahak made these remarks at the Sustainability Impact Forum, part of the World Governments Summit agenda, held under the theme "Partnerships for Sustainable Water" at Jumeirah Beach Hotel in Dubai. She also emphasized the UAE's efforts to develop solutions for reducing pollution in water bodies, highlighting cooperation with clean rivers institutions worldwide to tackle pollution sources before they reach oceans, which directly impacts marine ecosystems and aquatic life.
She warned about the direct effects of such pollution on food security, as it impacts fish stocks vital for communities in coastal cities and affects broader marine biodiversity. Discussing the Sustainability Impact Forum, Al Dahak noted its role as a global platform for addressing challenges and shaping solutions, featuring participation from several countries, including those most affected by climate challenges.
Dr. Al Dahak reiterated the UAE's commitment to strengthening solutions, particularly in Africa, and mentioned the importance of creating global platforms for solution-building. She stressed the significance of enhancing environmental awareness from an early age, aligning with National Environment Day on 4th February, which this year adopts the theme Year of Family. She emphasized embedding environmental practices to drive societal change towards sustainable development goals, focusing on conserving resources and achieving water security for future generations.
