Kampala: The United Arab Emirates has significantly increased its humanitarian aid to support Sudanese refugees in Uganda by providing 30,000 relief food packages to the Kiryandongo Refugee Camp. This initiative is part of the second phase of the UAE’s humanitarian aid effort, launched in April 2024, seeking to aid 100,000 people.
According to Emirates News Agency, the distribution of aid was overseen by Abdalla Hassan Al Shamsi, UAE Ambassador to Uganda, who was accompanied by several senior Ugandan government officials and representatives from local communities. Al Shamsi praised the UAE’s commitment to supporting Sudanese refugees and emphasized the importance of international cooperation during times of crisis.
Al Shamsi reiterated the UAE’s dedication to following the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in supporting crisis-affected communities. He highlighted the UAE’s pledge to provide USD 100 million in aid, as announced at the International Humanitarian Conferenc
e for Sudan in Paris. He expressed hope that the emergency food aid would support affected Sudanese families, including children, women, and men, and confirmed the UAE’s ongoing assistance to Sudanese people in neighboring countries until peace is reestablished in Sudan.
Balaam Barugahara, Uganda’s Minister of State for Youth and Children Affairs, expressed gratitude for the UAE’s aid effort, describing it as an extension of UAE’s consistent humanitarian work. He acknowledged the international efforts to alleviate the suffering of refugees in host countries, including Uganda.
The UAE’s humanitarian aid plan includes future developmental projects, such as drilling eight water wells and constructing 16 health facilities in the Kiryandongo Refugee Camp, aiming to improve the living conditions of Sudanese refugees further.
