Abu dhabi: The UAE is making significant strides in environmental conservation with a proactive approach to nature and wildlife protection, as stated by Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment. The nation's efforts are guided by a vision established by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, aiming for a sustainable global impact.
According to Emirates News Agency, Dr. Al Dahak emphasized that protecting biodiversity and preserving ecosystems are central to the UAE's identity and its environmental diplomacy. This aligns with the theme of the International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) 2026, "Acting locally for global impact." The UAE has made substantial progress in achieving the goals of the Convention on Biological Diversity, surpassing geographical boundaries.
Dr. Al Dahak highlighted the UAE's pioneering initiatives such as breeding and reintroducing the Arabian oryx and designating the country's waters as a refuge for the world's second-largest dugong population. The nation has also launched international initiatives to protect falcons and other birds of prey, ensuring sustainable management and preventing illegal trafficking.
The UAE's efforts extend to marine environments, with significant projects aimed at restoring coral reefs to enhance marine biodiversity and fish stocks. The Mangrove Alliance for Climate (MAC), established with Indonesia, exemplifies how local initiatives can evolve into international platforms. The MAC has united 47 nations to promote nature-based solutions and protect mangrove forests.
Dr. Al Dahak reiterated the UAE's commitment to climate change mitigation and ecosystem preservation, with a goal to plant 100 million mangroves across the country by 2030. The UAE also upholds a zero-tolerance policy towards illegal wildlife trade, with strict laws imposing severe penalties for violations.
Concluding her statement, Dr. Al Dahak affirmed the UAE's dedication to global environmental action, reinforcing national frameworks and expanding international partnerships to protect nature and ensure a sustainable future for coming generations.
