UN Official Calls for Immediate Ceasefire in Gaza Amid Escalating Crisis

New york: A senior UN official on Wednesday urged the Security Council to push for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the release of all hostages, warning that the war has become 'a nightmare of historic proportions'.

According to Emirates News Agency, Khaled Khiari, Assistant Secretary-General for the Middle East, addressed ministers and ambassadors, emphasizing that ongoing discussions must result in a permanent end to hostilities, the release of all hostages, and unimpeded access for humanitarian aid to facilitate recovery and reconstruction efforts.

Khiari described the severe conditions on the ground, highlighting expanded Israeli military operations, particularly in Deir Al-Balah, which have aggravated mass displacement. He noted that UN premises have also been targeted, disrupting humanitarian operations and worsening the already critical situation.

Gazan health authorities report that at least 1,891 Palestinians have died in Gaza since 30 June, including 294 individuals reportedly killed while attempting to collect aid near militarized distribution points. Since 9 July, Israel has permitted limited fuel deliveries through the Karim Abu Salem crossing following a 130-day complete blockade. However, Khiari cautioned that the amount of fuel provided is insufficient to sustain essential life-saving services in Gaza, where nearly every facet of life relies on fuel.

Addressing the situation in the occupied West Bank, Khiari reported high levels of violence, including deadly Israeli military operations and attacks by settlers on Palestinians. He concluded by stressing that only a revived political process towards a two-State solution can provide a sustainable resolution to the conflict.
