COP29: The World Green Economy Organisation (WGEO) has formalized a strategic partnership with the Government of the Republic of Palau through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed at the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29). According to Emirates News Agency, the MoU was signed by Surangel Whipps Jr, President of the Republic of Palau, and Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Chairman of WGEO, focusing on low-carbon solutions and natural resource conservation. A key aspect of the agreement is ocean conservation, a crucial area for Palau as a leading Small Island Developing State (SIDS).
The partnership aims to create a sustainable growth blueprint that aligns with both national and regional objectives, contributing significantly to global sustainability efforts. President Surangel S. Whipps, Jr. emphasized the importance of this collaboration, noting its focus on ocean conservation an
d green economy strategies that benefit both Palau and the global community.
Saeed Al Tayer expressed a shared vision for a sustainable global economy, highlighting the partnership’s potential to amplify the voices of vulnerable nations and work towards a greener, resilient world.
This MoU represents a forward-looking agenda that combines regional strengths with global goals, setting a precedent for a resilient, low-carbon future. The collaboration is expected to inspire other nations to commit to impactful climate action and sustainability.
One key facet of the partnership is the development of green economy projects tailored to the unique challenges of small island nations. By aligning these projects with the needs of Palau and similar islands, WGEO and Palau aim to pioneer initiatives that encourage other countries to adopt similar approaches.
Under the MoU, WGEO will provide Palau with access to expertise and best practices, enabling the scaling of green economy projects and promoting sustainability.
WGEO will also promote the Global Alliance on Green Economy (GAGE), assisting Palau in developing its national green economy strategy and potentially inspiring similar partnerships worldwide.
The partnership also encompasses high-level advocacy efforts, with WGEO and Palau engaging in international climate discussions, making joint statements, and hosting global forums to promote low-emission development and climate resilience. This collaboration is intended to demonstrate the power of collective action in addressing environmental challenges.
