Abu Dhabi:More than 6,500 people benefited from Abu Dhabi's Personalised Weight Management Programme during its first year, achieving an average weight reduction of 14 percent. Participants who stayed in the programme for a full year recorded reductions exceeding 22 percent.
According to Emirates News Agency, the programme has expanded its treatment options by introducing the country's first oral treatment for weight management, including Vondayo and Wegovy tablets, across all participating healthcare facilities. These additions provide physicians with more tailored treatment options based on each patient's health condition and individual needs.
The programme employs personalised treatment plans that integrate behavioural support, nutritional counselling, clinical interventions, and continuous medical follow-up to manage obesity as a chronic disease and mitigate related health risks. Success stories include a participant who reduced his weight from 170 kilograms to 130 kilograms, avoiding surgical intervention, and another who lost nine kilograms to enter a healthy weight range after overcoming a weight-loss plateau.
Scientific evidence supports the programme’s results, showing that a 13 percent weight loss among individuals with obesity can significantly reduce the risks of Type 2 diabetes, sleep apnoea, hypertension, and lipid disorders. Durra Al Blooshi, Acting Executive Director of the Community Health Sector at Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre (ADPHC), highlighted the programme's model of personalised healthcare, emphasizing the importance of an integrated approach to treating obesity.
Launched in June 2025 by the Department of Health - Abu Dhabi and ADPHC, the programme is available at over 54 healthcare facilities, with plans to extend to 15 more locations to further expand access across the emirate.
