Abu Dhabi:Archireef, a nature-technology company specializing in marine ecosystem protection and restoration, has successfully transitioned research innovations from the University of Hong Kong into an integrated business in Abu Dhabi. This move has bolstered local manufacturing capabilities, created specialized jobs, and contributed to the emirate's sustainable economy.

According to Emirates News Agency, Archireef's journey highlights Abu Dhabi's attractiveness to global startups, offering a supportive business environment with advanced infrastructure, strategic partnerships, and industrial capabilities. The company is known for developing nature-based engineering solutions, such as 3D-printed terracotta Reef Tiles and Eco SeaWall Panels, which aid in protecting and restoring marine habitats.

Archireef's business model integrates environmental assessment, engineering deployment, long-term monitoring, and data-backed reporting. This approach enhances confidence in environmental outcomes and supports investment in sustainable solutions. Dr. Vriko Yu, Co-Founder and CEO of Archireef, emphasized Abu Dhabi as the company's first market outside Hong Kong, citing the emirate's commitment to marine ecosystem protection and its conducive environment for specialized companies as key factors in their decision.

The company's initial project in Abu Dhabi's Al Dhafra Region, in cooperation with ADQ and the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD), was pivotal in adapting its solutions to local conditions. In 2022, Archireef established an eco-engineering facility in Khalifa Economic Zones Abu Dhabi (KEZAD), enhancing local production and adding NatureTech and ClimateTech capabilities to the emirate's industrial landscape.

Dr. Yu highlighted the role of Abu Dhabi's Hub71 in facilitating Archireef's establishment by connecting it with government entities, investors, and private-sector partners, which was crucial for building trust and forming key relationships. Over 3.5 years, Archireef secured more than AED40.4 million in partnerships across various sectors.

Globally, the company has contributed to the protection and restoration of significant marine habitats in Hong Kong, Singapore, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia, with plans to restore 125 hectares by 2030.
