UAE Condemns Iranian Attacks on Civilian Infrastructure

Dubai: The United Arab Emirates has condemned what it describes as egregious and terrorist Iranian attacks targeting critical civilian infrastructure. These attacks have persisted for 26 days with more than 2,000 ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones targeting airports, residential areas, and civilian sites across the UAE, marking a "blatant violation of the state's sovereignty and international humanitarian law."

According to Emirates News Agency, Jamal Al Musharakh, the UAE Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office and Other International Organisations in Geneva, addressed the Human Rights Council on Wednesday, stating that the situation is not merely a military escalation but a systematic behavior that threatens regional and international security. Al Musharakh emphasized that these attacks undermine global stability, particularly as they target infrastructure crucial for civilian safety, energy security, and international supply chains.

Al Musharakh pointed out that Iran's attacks have not targeted nations it is at war with but rather its neighbors, who have made significant efforts to avoid escalation. He noted that Iran is isolated from its neighbors and the international community, defying the United Nations Charter in an attempt to destabilize the international order.

The UAE has categorically rejected any justifications Iran may offer for these attacks. Al Musharakh highlighted the contradiction between Iran's claims of good neighborliness and its actions, which include targeting civilians and infrastructure. The UAE has suffered the loss of three armed forces members, with six civilians killed and 166 others injured in these attacks.

The repercussions of these attacks extend beyond the region, threatening navigation in key waterways and destabilizing energy markets. The United Nations Security Council adopted Resolution 2817, condemning the Iranian attacks, with 136 UN member states cosponsoring it. Additionally, the International Maritime Organisation adopted a resolution condemning Iranian threats against ships and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

Al Musharakh called on the Human Rights Council to condemn Iran's unlawful attacks, emphasizing the UAE's commitment to good neighborliness and peaceful coexistence. He reaffirmed the UAE's right to protect its sovereignty and security in accordance with international law, highlighting the nation's resilience and determination to achieve development and prosperity.

He concluded by stressing that the Iranian attacks have demonstrated the strength and resilience of the UAE's institutions and society.
